Since 2018, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has promoted the Teaching Practice Research Program, establishing a continuous peer-review and mentoring mechanism to integrate creativity and reflection into curricula and to encourage the implementation of innovative teaching plans in classrooms.
In 2021, among 1,539 approved projects, only 138 were selected as Outstanding Projects through rigorous preliminary review, secondary review, and final selection—an award rate of just 8%. Professor Chih-Chien Wang of the Graduate Institute of Information Management was honored with the Outstanding Faculty Award in the Business and Management category for his project “Integrating Adaptive Learning, Video-based Self-learning Materials, and Mastery Learning to Enhance Learning Outcomes in Consumer Behavior Fundamentals.” This recognition marks the first time that a faculty member of the university has received this prestigious honor since the program was launched.
On March 9, the MOE held the award ceremony and press conference, where Deputy Minister Meng-Chi Liu personally presented the award. Videos of the award-winning teachers’ reflections and project reports were also released on the MOE Teaching Practice Research Program Achievement Exchange Platform (https://tpr.moe.edu.tw/achievement/), providing valuable resources for university faculty across Taiwan.
Professor Wang remarked that after being appointed as a Distinguished Professor, he felt an even greater responsibility to strengthen teaching and address classroom challenges, such as students’ varying levels of prior knowledge, difficulties in making up for absences, and last-minute exam preparation. To tackle these issues, his project focused on three pillars: adaptive learning, self-learning materials, and mastery learning. Although preparing self-learning materials required significant effort and time, he emphasized that the ultimate goal was to enhance students’ learning effectiveness. Despite students sometimes feeling that the coursework required more time investment, their academic performance improved significantly, which gave him a great sense of accomplishment. He further noted that as long as more teachers are willing to invest in improving teaching practices, the overall quality of higher education will continue to advance positively.
In addition, to encourage teachers’ dedication, the university grants the “Teaching Innovation Outstanding Faculty Award” to all program participants, along with a monetary reward of up to NT$30,000. The Teaching and Learning Development Center further explained that the MOE’s Teaching Practice Research Program issues its annual call for proposals every November to December. The Center also organizes information sessions after the MOE’s official announcement and has seen increasing participation from faculty members, encouraging more teachers to prepare early for submission.
